Food Marketing & Nutrition

FREE KIT

The average child in the US sees about 40,000 advertisements per year, most of which are for sodas, candy, breakfast cereals, and fast food. High in sugar, calories and fat, these “empty calorie” foods are often targeted to young people using kid-friendly graphics, favorite media characters, and cross marketing techniques. This kit explores how advertising plays a role in influencing the eating and consumer habits of youth, and encourages kids to think about their own food choices, product packaging, and food label information, and whether or not it’s okay for food advertisers to target young people.

Included in the Media Literacy Toolbox DVD-ROM.
