You may not need any special software to use our media literacy kits. The standard setup of your computer’s operating system (Windows, MacOS or Linux) will often be able to open and display all of the media examples. If not, free software downloads are available.
Video
The movie files are provided in Windows Media (.wmv) format. If you are using Microsoft Windows, you already have software that can open and play the movies. If you cannot open and play the movie files, you can download a free player at:
www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia (Windows Media Player)
Alternative: If you normally use QuickTime to play movies, you can download free components that will allow you to play .wmv files in QuickTime. Download at:
www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx
Audio
The audio files are in MP3 format. QuickTime Player, Windows Media Player and most other media players can open and play MP3 audio files. If you cannot open and play the audio files, you can download a free MP3 player at:
www.winamp.com/player (Winamp Media Player)
Pictures
The picture files on this disk are JPEG files (.jpg format). They can be opened by virtually any image processing software included with your operating system.
Documents
The documents (like the discussion & activity guide and articles) are in PDF format. Most operating systems today can open PDF files. If you cannot open and print the documents, you can download Acrobat Reader for free at:
www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
