Reality TV

Reality television can be defined as unscripted dramatic or humorous situations using “ordinary” people rather than paid actors or actresses. However, many reality TV shows choose participants who are celebrities and many of the participants are constructed, at times around stereotypes, much like characters on a fictional television series are created. The end product is a highly contrived and influenced form of reality. Reality television can be deconstructed just like any other piece of media and does tell us something about our world, no matter how scripted and fake the show may be. This kit serves as an introduction to reality television and examines class, body image and the representation of women in examples of reality TV.
