Racism is a system of oppression and privilege which assumes the superiority of one racial group over another. In the US, as in other parts of the world, white people as a group are privileged and people of color as a group experience oppression. A primary aspect of being in the privileged group is that this group's experiences are normalized. When we do see people of color in our media, how are they represented and marketed to? This guide looks at examples of people of color in print advertising and examines how they are represented and used to market certain products.
